Taormina

The romantic city of Taormina

Taormina is very popular with tourists due to its pristine surroundings and romantic atmosphere. The countryside around Taormina is gorgeous and seems to have been left untouched by history. The climate here is very pleasant and not as hot as in other Sicilian regions. Taormina is located in the east of Sicily and experts have estimated that it was founded around 1300 B.C. The town was completely destroyed in the 10th century following an uprising by locals against the Arabic occupation and it was only 200 or 300 years later that the area was re-settled. Taormina lost importance in the 18th century, when an important street was relocated to no longer pass through the township.

Tourism in Taormina

If you decide to visit this town you should not miss out on a chance to see the Ancient Theatre of Taormina. It is considered to be at least 2200 years old and was probably rebuilt by the Romans on the site of an earlier Greek amphitheatre. It is supposed that it was mainly used for gladiatorial battles. Here there is also an Archaeology Museum called the Antiquarium, where some of the finds from archaeological digs are exhibited.

If you love the hustle and bustle of pedestrian areas, do not miss the Corso Umberto, a lively little street full of shops selling mementos and souvenirs and cosy, picturesque little cafés.
