Walking on Mount Etna

Europe's most active volcano

If you are looking for a unique and unforgettable experience then you should seriously consider walking on Mount Etna during your holiday in Sicily. The volcano is a great mix of ash, rocks, ice, vegetation and natural beauty. No wonder it is the most popular tourist attraction in Sicily. As you go further up the mountain the landscape will change and the view just gets better and better. The best time of year to view the Etna flora is between May and July.

Facts about Mount Etna:
- It is 3323 m tall and the highest and most active volcano in Europe.
- It covers an area of about 1200 sq.km.
- It erupts on a frequent basis resulting in an ever changing landscape.
- It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.
- The fertile soil on the lower part of the volcano is excellent for the production of citrus fruits, various plants, orchards and wine.

How to climb Mount Etna:
There are many different hiking trails, some more suitable for ascent and some for descent, and the level of difficulty varies, which means that you do not necessarily have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the great views from the volcano. It is however recommended to climb Etna together with a certified guide as it is a tall mountain that should be treated with respect due to the fast-changing and unpredictable weather. Also remember to bring proper clothing, food and drinks.

There are two main points of departure; Etna South (Rifugio Sapienza) and Etna North (Piano Provenzana). From Rifugio Sapienza you can take a cable car until 2500 meters and from there either ride with a 4x4 bus or walk to the crater in about 2 hours. From Piano Provenzana you can choose to walk to the top or ride with a 4x4 bus to the observatory at 2400 meters. From the observatory you may walk up to one of the craters.
